Choosing the correct Content Management System (CMS)

Ten years ago, getting a new website built was a major technical hassle. You had all sorts of crazy acronyms like HTML and CSS. Those kind of things still exist but in the background.

These days, the smart choice is to use what’s known as a content management system (CMS). A CMS is a clever piece of software which can allow you to create and update your website relatively simply.

In fact, the growth of CMSs has made website management dramatically easier for the average UK business owner.

Among the many there are three popular CMSs available. We’ll tell you what they are in a second. But first there are three main factors you must consider for your website.

Consideration 1) Is it easy for you to use?

When somebody builds a new website for you, you want to make sure that you can access it day or night to make any desired changes. A CMS gives you the ability to edit your site any time.

To the average business owner who doesn’t know much about websites and doesn’t tinker around with them often most CMSs are quite difficult to use.

The one we’re going to recommend to you is the easiest to use. In some cases it can be as easy to edit as a Word document.

Consideration 2) Will it look great in all devices?

These days, about half of all internet access is performed from mobile devices.

If your website doesn’t look great on a laptop computer AND a mobile device then you’re losing traffic and sales.

In April 2015, Google decided that websites which didn’t offer a dedicated mobile experience would fare worse in search results conducted from mobile devices. They now show up lower in searches performed on mobile devices, underneath mobile results.

The smartest way round this is to ensure that your new website is mobile responsive. This means the site is built to scale to every device, no matter how small or big the screen.

The page rebuilds itself according to the size of screen it’s appearing on.

Responsive websites are a pain to build, but they’re worth the effort.

Consideration 3) Is it safe and future proof?

The CMS we’re about to recommend to you is very safe, and very future proof. Not only because it’s the most popular CMS on the market, but because thousands of people around the world can help you with it.

We know of a business owner whose website had been designed by a bloke he met at a local networking meeting. Which was great until that bloke went to prison! Yes, this is true.

And the website was written in bespoke code that no one else in the world could do anything with. This meant that for a year or so, that business owner couldn’t update his own website!

That’s an extreme example, but in real terms, what if you had a site that only your web designer could edit…and you fell out with that person? That’s not a robust solution for protecting your business’s online marketing.

You want your website to have built in technology that thousands of people anywhere can help you with. You also want to ensure that the technology is future proof…that it’ll still be here and thriving in 10 years’ time.

WordPress is open source, meaning it’s essentially free. You pay for the hundreds of hours it takes someone to set it up and make it perfect for your business, not the core technology itself.

It’s easy to use. It’s responsive and highly future proof. One of the major benefits of WordPress is that in a few years’ time, when your website is due another design refresh, you won’t have to get a whole new site built again.

WordPress treats the content and the look of a website quite separately. Using the analogy of a car, think of WordPress as the chassis and the engine. And the way the website looks is the body.
In the future, you can take off the tired old body and put on a new one, while the chassis and engine stays the same. New looking site, same content.

This will cost you dramatically less and save you a lot of time.
